Quail
AnimalsThe migrating birds God sent as meat in the desert — provision granted, and provision abused.
Quail are small migratory game birds that cross the Sinai region in great flocks, flying low and exhausted — easy to catch in huge numbers. Twice God used them to feed Israel in the wilderness, sending them up to cover the camp in the evening.
The first time, quail came alongside the manna as a gracious answer to the people’s hunger, “at even ye shall eat flesh.” The second time, however, the people’s craving turned to greedy complaint, despising the manna and demanding meat.
God gave them quail “a whole month,” but their gluttonous discontent brought judgment, and the place was named Kibroth-hattaavah, “the graves of lust.” The quail tell a double story: God can spread a table in the desert, yet provision received with grumbling greed becomes a snare rather than a blessing.
