Bread of the Presence (Showbread)
Objects & SymbolsTwelve loaves set before God continually — Israel ever in his presence, and a hint of the true Bread.
On a golden table in the Holy Place stood twelve loaves of bread, arranged in two rows and renewed every Sabbath. Called the “bread of the presence” (or showbread), it sat perpetually before the LORD as a memorial offering.
The twelve loaves represented the twelve tribes of Israel, held continually before God’s face — the whole covenant people kept in his presence and provision. The old bread, once replaced, was eaten by the priests as something holy.
This bread became the centre of a telling episode: David, hungry and on the run, was given the consecrated loaves to eat, and Jesus cited it to show that mercy outweighs ritual. In the same Gospel Jesus calls himself “the bread of life” — the true and living bread, of which the loaves on the table were only a shadow.
