Ant

Animals

The tiny insect Proverbs holds up as a teacher of foresight, diligence, and self-discipline.

The ant is one of the smallest creatures named in Scripture, yet it is singled out as a model of wisdom. Without any ruler driving it, the colony works tirelessly, gathering and storing food in season against the time when none can be found.

Proverbs sends the lazy person to school under it: “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.” The lesson is initiative and provision — the ant needs “no guide, overseer, or ruler” to do what is needful, but acts wisely on its own.

Scripture calls the ants “exceeding wise” precisely because of their foresight, preparing in summer for the lean months ahead. Greatness in God’s economy is not measured by size or strength but by faithful, self-motivated diligence; the least of creatures can shame the idle into wisdom.
